Configuring AutoCAD for laser cutting

CAUTION: You must send all of your laser cut jobs from MODEL SPACE ONLY. There is a known problem with sending jobs that created in a Layout (paper space).

Generating files for the laser cutter is the same process as generating plots for the plotters, except the power and speed settings need to be configured for each material.

Step 1: Plot Setup

  1. Select “plot” from the file drop down menu.
  2. Click on the arrow key in the lower right corner.

Step 2: Selecting the Laser Cutter

  1. Select “laser cutter” from the printer/plotter menu.
  2. Select “Universal laser” from the plot style table (pen assignment).
  3. Click on the properties button. The plotter configuration editor will appear.

Step 3: Plotter Configuration Editor

  1. Click on the custom properties button.The laser cutter properties will appear.

Step 4: Setting up the laser cutter power and speed settings

  1. To configure each color:
    1. Make sure that the color is selected and highlighted in blue. Make sure that you do not have more than one selected or the changes will apply to ALL those highlighted.
    2. Enter the desired power, speed and ppi settings and click the SET button. If the set button is not pressed, the settings will not apply. Power and speed settings for tested materials is available on the Power and Speed Settings page.
  2. Once all of the pen colors properly configured, Click OK.

 

Step 5: Setting up the plot area

  1. Un-check the fit to paper box.
  2. Select “1:1” from the scale drop down menu.
  3. Select “window’ from the what to plot drop menu and select all objects to be included in the laser cut.
  4. Click the preview button.

Step 6: Verify the correct orienation and location of laser cut job

  1. Full preview:

    Using the Full preview helps to determine if the cut job is oriented correctly. It should always appear in the lower left hand corner of the preview window.

    • Right click and select Plot.
  1. The Browse to Plot file dialogue window will appear. Verify that you are saving the plot file to the I:\ drive. Give the file an appropriate name and click SAVE.
  2. Once finished, the job must be sent to the queue. Use the Laser plot requestor
