A drop-box is a folder on the shared portion of a course folder that can be used for students to drop off their assignments.
There are many advantages to using a drop box:
- All instructors retain full control of the folder.
- Students can not resubmit their project after the first version has been submitted.
- Students can not see other students' work that has been submitted.
Here are the quick and easy steps to setting up a drop box in your course folder:

Step 1: Create a new folder
Create a new folder by either clicking on: File - New - Folder or by right clicking on the folder and selecting New - Folder from the menu that appears. Give it a name that will represent what the folder's task will be (i.e. assignment drop box or assignment submission folder). |

Step 2: Access the folder's properties
Now that you have a new folder, you must change the folder's properties so that the students in your class have access to submit files but nothing else. You can access the folder's properties by right clicking on the folder created in step 1 and select the Properties option. NOTE: Please make sure that you are changing the permissions for NEW folder ONLY and NOT the main course folder on the shared drive. If the permissions are changed on the main folder, you risk removing the permissions for everyone who has been given access. |

Viewing the folder's permissions
In the folder's properties window, click on the folder's security tab. Notice that they list of user who have access to this folder. Typically, the professor, their TAs and the user group which has access to this folder would be listed here. In the case of this example, Douglas McCallum would be considered the administrator of this folder and the user group, arpl_crsSample, is the course group whose permissions are going to be changed to create the drop box. |

Setting the drop-box permissions
Click on the course user group. Please a check mark in the DENY column next to the permissions: READ & EXECUTE, LIST FOLDER CONTENTS, and READ. Place a check mark in the ALLOW column next to WRITE. Click the OK button. Your drop box is now complete. |

How to use the drop-box
Using the drop box is easy but can seem troublesome since the user no longer has access to see what is in the folder (i.e. can not open the folder to place the file IN it). To use the drop box, a student needs to click and drag the file or copy and paste the file to be submitted into the drop box. |

Expected outcomes
If a student tries to resubmit the file, after the original file has been submitted, the error pictured to the left will appear. |
