Using the new printing system

As of the start of the August 2008 academic semester, a new print accounting system as been put in place. This new system has been divided into two redundant print servers; ARPL-5 and ARPL-15. If you are printing to ARPL-5, you will be presented with a new means of printing which will present you will the opportunity to:

  • Enter a billing code
  • Preview the cost of the print job.

Here is how the new system looks and how to use it.

Log into the accounting system

When printing to ARPL-5, you will be prompted to log into the Print Assistant. Use your UBit username and password.

Click the OK button or press the ENTER key.

Enter a billing code

The second prompt will request that you enter a billing code. If you want to use a billing code to which you have access, you can type it into the box. Unfortunately, you can not select from a list of billing codes to which you have access to. You must already know the name and type it into the box exactly as setup.

If billing code is not being used, press the OK button.

Preview print charges

The third window is the Cost preview window.

This window will show the total cost of the print job sent and show the available balance in the print account.

It is at this time that if there is insufficient funds in the account being printed to, the print job can be left on hold while additional funds are added to the account. The job will stay on hold until the ACCEPT button has been clicked.

Otherwise, the ACCEPT button can be clicked at any time and the print job will be released to go to the active queue.

If the print job is not correct or if a problem exists, the job can also deleted by clicking the DELETE button.

Please note: If you are using a billing code, the account information and balance being shown in this window IS NOT the balance on the billing code being used. It is merely showing the balance on the users personal account.

None of the printers listed are mapped to ARPL-5

If all of your printers are mapped to ARPL-15, a connection to the ARPL-5 printers can be made by:

  1. Go to the START button, and click on RUN.
  2. In the RUN box, type:\\ARPL-5
  3. A window with all of the ARPL-5 printers will be listed. Double click on the printer to which a connection needs to be made.
  4. Wait for the printer queue to appear. The printer is now ready.

I am printing to ARPL-5 but am not getting the Print assistant prompts

The print assistant client is already installed on all of the lab and studio systems and most faculty systems whose users are typical billing code users. If prints are being sent to ARPL-5 and the Print assistant prompts are not appearing, then the system does not have the client installed. Please request that the client be installed on the system by filling out the Print Assistant Installation Request form online.
